Sound & Vision Podcast - Evan Mast (Episode 324)
Brackett Creek is pleased to present the latest video work by Evan Mast shown alongside two new screenprint editions.
Landscape #3 is a 14 minutes and 37 second video shot in 2021 while traveling through Karachi, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and Lahore, Pakistan. Mast seamlessly edits together hundreds of long static shots into one slow panning landscape.
Played as a loop, the video invites the viewer to look longer and build their own routine and set of connections during the viewing experience. Mast composes a piece of ambient music to pair with each video, as the original footage is produced silent. For the viewer they exist as something to surrender to—a surrogate for that first few days in a foreign place, when one still lacks reference points in the location and everything seems untethered to any routine from our real life. The series started in southern Japan, Chongqing, China and parts of Taiwan.
The two limited edition prints were created from film stills, occurring respectively at 0:02 and 8:44. The layers for the screenprints were created in a similar manner to how Mast edits his films—a process of image cropping and removal, but have been reproduced in a limited palette of five and six color blocks per print. Both were printed in Baltimore with Jonathan Beaumont Thomas in May 2022.
Evan Mast (b. 1979) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Mast produces music under his stage name E.VAX and was one half of the electronic band Ratatat. His latest album was released in 2021.
